Storyboards

Here are our storyboards for our music video, as you can see they are not to specific and detailed as us ourselves don't really know what camera angles we are going to use until we get to the location. But these help us understand how many shots we need and what types, and can tell us if we need more shots when we show them to our teacher, but these are a work in progress. Sorry for the standard of the drawings, George isn't the greatest artist.

Risk Assessment

Car Park.

When in the car park we have to be careful of cars that are using the car park, and as we are on the roof of the car park and it is quite high up, we have to be careful of not going to close to the edge and being silly as it is a big drop!

Around The Town.

When we film around Windsor Town, we have to be careful when we film at night, making sure we are safe and no one feels threatened by us or the camera. We have to choose the location correctly and make sure it safe. In the day time, the risk is allot less as there will be more people around.

Bridge Over the Motorway.

Again this is a fairly dangerous location if we are not careful and act stupid. The Motorway we will be over is the M4 which is a major and busy motorway. Again in the day it is allot safer as we can see what we are doing clearer. At night we must be careful not to cause any injures or accidents, and on the bridge we must be very serious about the possible danger.

Contacting the Artist

I tried contacting Kid Cudi via Twitter but I am still without a reply regarding permission to use his song "Day 'N' Nite" in our music video. I anticipated that I would not receive a reply via his personal network page on twitter so I also sent an e-mail to his record label G.O.O.D Music seeing as they would be in charge of making these kind of decisions..I am still waiting for a reply.

CD Cover Design (Practice)

Below is the CD cover that I created using various images from the internet just as an outline for our final digipack. Creating the main look of the CD cover took me a few lessons and then with the help of george we added the information on the front and back. I originally did this to experiment with the various tools at my disposal on Photoshop and I feel that I created something pretty nice.
Our final digipack will be something similar to this, it will have the day and night theme with similar locale and images that we have gathered ourselves.

Photoshop -Magazine Advert (Outline)

George was the main creator of this practice magazine advert which we decided to make so we could outline what ours would look like once we came to making it.
We made this using the general conventions of a magazine advert which generically include a bold main image, the date of the album's release, album name, song name, name of the artist/band and the record label they are on. Using images found on the internet, we followed these conventions and George managed to come up with this design on computer from the initial sketch we did.

Practice Magazine Advert Sketch

Here is a simple sketch of the practise magazine advert we are going to make so we can clearly outline what we want our final one to look like. The sketch is really simple as we may want to tweak some things and add more images/text etc..

Basement Jaxx - Rooty Magazine Advert Analysis

The magazine advertisement above is for the house/electro artist Basement Jaxx's album 'Rooty'.
The ad has different styles of font for each important piece of information on the advert. The  name of the artist is large and has a lot of colour  in it to make it stand out. The album is in the same font as the artist's name but is smaller and is a plain white colour. Beneath the name of the album is the date it is released (June 25)
The ad also shows a website for further information of the artist and the label (www.xlrecordings.com)
The same image of the album is used for advert which has a strange theme to it. The main image is of a White (silver-back) Gorilla eating some leaves with stars in the background, this connotes the idea that the album is based around imagination which is enhanced by the colours used in the advert as well.

Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3 Magazine Advert Analysis

This is a very well laid out magazine advert for Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint 3.
The date of the album’s release is 09.11.09, which is shown boldly on the right page of the magazine advert. The artist’s image is a mix between casual and smart, his image on the advert is bold and he stands out well with the black clothing and is seen to be standing alongside buildings in the advert which connotes that he has “reached the top”. This magazine ad doesn’t have any featuring songs on it, which can be argued as a good or bad thing. The bad may be that consumers can’t see what the album contains but this could also be good, as it will entice people to find out more information about the album. The album was released as a CD and for download at the same time, which allowed parallel sales of the album. It was available for download on iTunes, which is one of the biggest sources for downloadable music while the CD is sold in shops such as HMV. This magazine advert as very bold images, one I’ve already mentioned being the picture of Jay-Z alongside the buildings another would be the image on the right which seems to be a collection of different instruments and electronics with 3 large bold lines across which means the “3” in the album’s name. The record label is shown on the page on the right under the release date. The name of the record company is Roc Nation. Jay-Z has his own website “www.jay-z.com” and can be seen on the magazine advert under the record label. It’s quite small as it isn’t something particularly important but some people may want it. One side of the magazine advert has a bold quote which reads “Is Jay-Z bigger than hip-hop?” which contrasts off the image above showing Jay-Z amongst buildings. The set colour scheme for this magazine advert is white, black and red which in my eyes works well to capture my attention onto the most bold parts of the advert.

Photoshop Experimentation #2

This time I decided to experiment with different colours, specifically adding colour onto an image myself, which can be basically described as colouring in. I found a photo which has enough detail to notice but not a lot which would complicate the process of colouring the image. See the results below!

Step #1 Desaturation

Step #2 1st BG Colour
Step #3 2nd BG Colour
Step #4 Jacket
 Step #5 Buttons
 Step #6 Face
This was just a basic colour palette experiment to show the stages of colouring an image in.

Photoshop Experimentation #1

I have been doing several experiments with photoshop because we are require to design a "digipack" for our music video along with a magazine advert for the music video. I am quite confident using the software from previous experience and have done several test photo edits. You can see one below!

Demographics & Psychographics

The song we have chosen falls under the genre of "Alternative hip hop" which is a sub-genre of "hip hop". This is because the song contains many different conventions and some of which are new to the hip hop genre forcing it into a sub-genre. Some musicologists believe that in this day and age 70% of hip-hop is bought by white listeners. The average listener's age is around 19-34, from a range of nationalities, ethnic groups and religions. Their collective spending power is $500 billion annually in the US alone. Music is much harder than films to determine demographics for because there are so many people to account for and most of these people will varied in themselves.
37% of 15-25-year-olds in China love hip hop according to several studies. According to Chinese government statistics, the 15-29 demographic makes up 22.8% of the population and seeing as we’re talking about China, that’s around 296 million people, a core hip hop demographic about the same size as the entire United States.

Music demographics are most of the time made up of assumptions made by the general public, it can be closely related to stereotypes and which listen to what kind of music.
Going off stereotypes and the kind of people who like hip hop. I would have to take a guess that the Psychographics of the people who listen to hip hop/alt hip hop are..
  • Aspirers: People who want to get onto the latest trend.
  • Strivers: Status oriented people who seek money, approval and social status. Obvious buyers of aspirational goods.
  • Explorers: seek novelty and want to try new things. They are likely to be early adopters of completely new products.
