Lyrics of our chosen song

Day And Night Lyrics

Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh...

[Kid Cudi:]
Day and night (what, what)
I toss and turn, I keep stressing my mind, mind (what, what)
I look for peace but see I don't attain (what, what)
What I need for keeps this silly game we play, play
Now look at this (what, what)
Madness to magnet keeps attracting me, me (what, what)
I try to run but see I'm not that fast (what, what)
I think I'm first but surely finish last, last

[Chorus:]
Cuz day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)
Day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone, some things will never change (never change)
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)

[Kid Cudi:]
Hold the phone (what, what)
The lonely stoner, mr. solo doe low (what, what)
He's on the move can't seem to shake the shade (what, what)
Within his dreams he see's the life he made, made
The pain is deep (what, what)
A silent sleeper you won't hear a peep, peep (what, what)
The girl he wants don't see no one into (what, what)
It seems the feelings that she had are through, through

[Chorus:]
Cuz day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)
Day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone, some things will never change (yeah) (never change)
The lonely loner seems to free his(yeah) mind at night (at, at, at night)

[Kid Cudi:]
Slow moe, (what, what)
When the temple slows up and creates that new, new (what, what)
He seems alive though he is feeling blue (what, what)
The sun is shining man he's super cool, cool
The lonely nights (what, what)
They fade away he slips into his white nights (what, what)
He smokes a clip and then he's on the way (what, what)
To free his mind in search of,
To free his mind in search of,
To free his mind in search of,

At, at, at night

Analysis of CD Cover

The name of the artist is Kid Cudi, this suggests that this is not the artists full real name, more like an alias with a variation of part of his name. The font/lettering is best described as well placed so that it is clear to read along with the white font colour on a slightly darker backing image. The physical appearance of the artist is minimal but significant. You can see that only a part of his head is being shown as a side profile and looks to be merged with the image of the moon. He doesn’t a have a distinctive facial expression. There are a lot of colour gradients on his face, which help to merge with the image of the moon. There are two very dominant images, which are linked together; this connotes the idea that the moon is a significant meaning in his life or the album. The title of the album is “Man on the moon: The end of day” this signifies that Kid Cudi is the man on the moon, mentally not physically, suggesting it’s his state of mind. Dominant colours include, red, orange, and purple but as they are gradients there are many different shades of these colours. These may connote that there is a lot of variation in the album with the use of different colours, which may mean different moods. There is also a parental advisory sticker on the CD cover which signifies that the song(s) contain words which may not be appropriate for younger people.

Textual Analysis #3

Labrinth - Earthquake ft. Tinie Tempah

Timothy McKenzie, better known by his stage name Labrinth, is an English singer-songwriter and record producer. McKenzie is signed to Simon Cowell's record label Syco, becoming the first non-talent show signing in six years. Initially, he was tipped to work as a producer, but Cowell signed him as a solo act. The music video I'll be analysing will be "Earthquake - Labrinth" which he himself produced. This song is an electro hop track with a hi-tech feel to it. The actual beat of the song is very simple with a high electric sound to it and furthermore emphasised by the visuals which are computer generated and quite conceptual. The visuals are 95% computer generated connoting that the song is more of a dance track. The visuals and where the song has a major sync point are in-time with his movement. One example is where he slams his foot on the ground and the surroundings react in-sync with the beat as well. This goes very well with the song name as well.
The digital theme of the music video is done very well as the visuals are not over the top, they are in-sync with the beats of the song and the artist. The
There is a part of the lyrics where the owner of the record label and the label itself are mentioned, this was obviously something the record label wanted and worked very well with the rest of the song. “Hey Simon. f***ing them up. Turning em syco". This kind of stuff isn't as obvious in other music videos but a lot of record labels like to put something in a song/music video which relates back to them. Labrinth's clothes change 5 times in this video suggesting that he has several different motifs which are all quite similar but different nonetheless. There is also an orchestral part of the song which the visuals shows as 5 people in hooded cloaks which all seem to be the artist. I'm not sure why this was put in the music video. It may have been to set-up for the appearance of Tinie Tempah. His part of the song being short makes an impact none the less as his entrance is quite dramatic emphasizing his presence. Labrinth and Tinie Tempah have both worked together many times before.
There is no sexual display in this video as the lyrics don't suggest there to be any. I would say this video is around 50% concept and 50% performance based as there is virtually no narrative within the video. The conceptual areas would be the digitalised visuals while the performance would be lip syncing with the track and dancing in-sync with the beats.
A lot of the visuals in the music video relate back to music itself, there are lot of digital sound waves created along with speakers placed all around, especially around the beginning.

Task Analysis 2

Kid Cudi - Pursuit of Happiness

Scott Mescudi, better known as Kid Cudi is a record producer under the G.O.O.D record label. The song Pursuit of Happiness has two music videos. The one I am going to analyse is the Megaforce version, which is the one I most, prefers and seems to fit the style of music much more. The entire music video is based around being trapped, either physically or mentally. At the beginning Cudi Is trying to get up but the illusion of hitting the sofa is repeated throughout, this connotes that he may be dreaming and the music video is about what’s going on through his mind. The lyrics “I’m on the pursuit of happiness” tells me that he is trying to escape what he is going through and the fact that he is trapped and restricted to the room emphasises that.
There is also two parts where he tries to climb out of the window but another illusion is apparent where there is a projection out of a window showing a road as it looks like Cudi is hanging off the ledge. The second one is where he is trying to climb out another window and as he is going through he falls back onto the sofa. After he falls onto he starts floating, this connotes that he is in some sort of mental state allowing these illusions to take place and work well with the song.
There are scenes, which are quite odd and match the theme of being in a dream state.
The illusions that take place emphasise the notion of looking on several occasions, these force you to look at certain things on the screen when they take place. One example would be where he goes to take a drink of milk and we are focusing on it as the illusion of drinking it sideways occurs. This is also the case for the sofa, on numerous occasions we are attracted to looking at the sofa because it has a big meaning in this music video.
The video is around 60% Conceptual, 30% Narrative and 10% Performance. I feel there is little performance because the only parts of it being apparent is when he is singing along but the rest of the music video has a conceptual narrative behind it and is telling a sort of story of escaping.
Most of Kid Cudi's music videos are narrative based but the lyrics of these songs allow them to have a conceptual meaning.
Towards the end he is surrounded by weird figures which clearly are part of his imagination, this connotes that these figures mean something in his life and are part of his usual routine of life and is trying to escape them. You can see him push past some of these figures showing his disregard for them.
This music video is an alternate to the original, it has a much different meaning and has helped me understand the different ways a set of lyrics can create and enhance music videos.
The music video has a lot of techniques which I can apply to my music video.

Textual Analysis #1 Fast Lane

Bad Meets Evil - Fast Lane ft. Eminem, Royce Da 5'9‏

Marshall Bruce Mathers III better known by his stage name Eminem or his alter ego Slim Shady, is an American rapper, record producer who decided to team up with royce da 5'9 to bring out an album called “Bad Meets Evil”. The music video I will be analysing is Fast Lane by Eminem, which was directed by James Larese. The music in the video belongs to the Rap genre and this is backed up mainly by the actual song/lyrics but certain characteristics such as clothing connotes the fact that they are dressed in a particular manner which suits the style of music. This whole music video is structured around the visualisation of lyrics through the use of brilliant editing. The video has a lot of typography on screen alongside the artist as they are singing the lyrics; this is only for certain lyrics of the song, which may mean more than others as they are being amplified. The animation techniques in this video are another way in which the lyrics are illustrated one example would be where Royce Da 5'9 hits a CGI of the word “Cop” showing his feelings towards them while singing the lyrics… “Slap up a cop and then snatch ‘im out of his uniform” This enhances the lyrics as they are illustrated using animation techniques to visually show the actions in the lyrics. The relationship between the music and visuals is quite varied so there are no specific things, which can be picked up on. The only thing, which is clear, is at times when the music changes beat there is a cut to the next scene where more visualisation of lyrics will be shown. I feel the record company is trying to sell this song on a huge scale as they know the artist “Eminem” is very popular and known around the world, the track will appeal to his fans along with Royce’s fans as this is a collaborative song. This song was the first of his album to be made into a music video which connotes the idea that this song means more to them a great deal more than the others songs on the album. The image of the artist being offered is in some sense the “re-image” as this was a kind of comeback album after producing somewhat low quality music for a while. The usual image of Eminem is being portrayed through his old look, which is what his target audience is used to and like. This a very different style of video to what Eminem has usually been in and kind of contrasts his image as an old school rapper in a narrative video with no conceptual features, but this video is quite the opposite and has a lot concept material within it. In the music there are definite motifs, which are represent the artist a lot, but the motif of the visuals is completely different to what Eminem has normally been involved with. Within this video there is no sense of sexual display, which can be seen in several of his other songs, the camerawork and costume don’t connote the idea of sexual display in the video either. Screens in this video are not present which seems appropriate, as the style of music wouldn’t fit that style of visualisation. This video is I would say around 60% conceptual and 30% performance. It’s arguable that the video has a sort of narrative to it as the visuals are following the lyrics so the 10% narrative is arguable. Many of the images created in the video are concept ideas, which help enhance the lyrics. There is still however some sense of performance in this video, which can be seen by the two artists in the video as they interact with these conceptual images, produced. This music video is very conceptual based which is very different to what this artist usually produces but it somehow in a sense produces a much more meaningful experience as the lyrics are heavily emphasised by these generated visuals. This is what can be argued as a narrative meaning within this music video, connoting the idea that this music video is open to interpretation by the audience as to what they are trying to portray by showing what they do.

Product Company Logo

We have decided to keep our production company as "Flicka Films" because felt it was appropriate to keep it as me and George are still in the group together.
With every company there is a logo to represent who they are, and with that on our minds we decided to make one. Me and George came up with different designs with how we could position the text, we came to the conclusion to have one of the F's reflected so they are facing back to back to create a neat effect. We then put "Flicka Films" in small font size so the name can be seen alongside the logo.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Ramtin and I am currently starting my second year at A level after receiving a B in media at AS. This year I feel confident that I will achieve the best possible grade I can in Media which I believe to be an A grade. To achieve this I must work even harder than last year and in general do better in both the coursework and exam side of A2. This year I am in a group with George who was in my group last year, we are both experienced with editing which proves vital as we have decided to make a music video which in some cases and hopefully ours will require a lot of good editing to make the visuals flow along with the music.

Throughout this blog you will see how me and George progress through this project right through to the final outcome of our music video.
